Cold rooms explained
A cold room is an insulated, sealed room with a refrigeration system that holds one steady temperature. The right type depends on what you store. Figures below are typical, and we confirm them for your product.
| Type | Typical temperature | Best for | Typical PUF panel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chiller room | 0 to +8°C | Fruit, vegetables, dairy, flowers, beverages | 75–100 mm |
| Pharma cold room | +2 to +8°C | Medicines and vaccines | 75–100 mm |
| Freezer room | −18 to −25°C | Frozen food, ice cream, meat, fish | 100–150 mm |
| Blast freezer | −30 to −40°C | Quick freezing before storage | 150 mm |
What goes into a cold room
Insulated PUF panels
Foam-core wall and ceiling panels that lock together and keep the cold in.
Refrigeration system
Compressor, condenser and evaporator sized for your load and storage temperature.
Doors and gaskets
Hinged or sliding insulated doors with tight seals to stop warm air leaking in.
Controller and alarms
A digital thermostat sets the temperature and alarms warn you if it drifts.
Floor and drainage
Insulated, sealed flooring and a drain line for defrost water.
Lighting and fittings
Cold-room lights, shelving and strip curtains that suit how you work.
How a cold room works
Two ideas keep stock cold: insulation that stops heat getting in, and a refrigeration cycle that carries heat out.
The evaporator picks up heat inside the room. The compressor and condenser move that heat outside, and the cycle repeats all day.
Insulated PUF panels: a foam core between two steel sheets. Colder rooms need a thicker core.
